Do you have your 485 approved ? If not, you are not supposed to contribute to any political campaigns. You have to be a GC holder or citizen to contribute to political campaigns. Its illegal otherwise.
In 1040, we have a checkbox to contribute $3 towards presidential election contribution. If I check that box while in H1B, is that illegal?

I have recently contacted CIS Ombudsman (3-4 Months ago) regarding my I-485 application.
My lawyer is perpetually suggesting it may jeopardize the case.
Is it true? and Why?

Processing dates for 485 seems to have greatly improved at NSC. Hopefully now they start issueing based on the priority date.
At NSC I am seeing the following entry
-----
I-485 Application to Register Permanent Residence or to Adjust Status Employment-based adjustment applications 4 Months
-----
What does 4 months mean?

Well, you could still try and apply in EB2, as you mentioned earning a master's degree.
I am one of those who came in 98 on F1 and went through 3 different GC processes (all EB2) to finally see the CPO email now. No regrets though, as I changed employers a few times (resulting in dropping the first two GC processes) to achieve growth (higher salaries, actually).
All the best to everyone waiting.
Thanks all.
I'm in my mid thirties now. I came as a teen, fifteen.
So I wonder....should the dream act come through....could it work in my favor too lol? I came through no choice of my own (though legally) with my parents....
And do i get a GC for beating everyone on here :)
j/k.

I remember that in the early nineties it was next to impossible to get a home loan in India. I think the only company which gave out home loans was HDFC and the interest rate was a whopping 16%. Property prices at that time conformed to what people could actually afford as the house had to be either paid in full or you had to take out a loan from your provident fund.
Fast forward to 2000 and beyond. After the Indian rupee became fully convertible and the banking regulations were relaxed every bank or finance company started to make loans. The upshot of that is that everyone could buy a house and car through taking out loans. This of course created this huge demand for new housing from the middle class which translated into a steep increase in land and property prices.
This may not exactly be a total bubble as loans are there to stay. What is happening though is that home construction is going on at a rapid pace and at some point Indian cities and their suburbs may be overbuilt. At that point you would be stuck with your house and not be able to sell as is happening in the US. Of course some markets will correct but I donot think Bombay, Bangalore or Hyderabad will.
I'm a a total layman regarding such issues and I am just trying to reason this through.
There has been a correction already going on in Bombay and Bangalore. Bombay has lost 30%. It is in the news.

i seriously doubt uscis will be slow in ead applications atleast not more than 6 mths. Reason:
1. there will be 500,000 applicants that will become out of status and uscis will be in news again
2. it helps them to get the $340 from you forever
So they will hire contractors to issues this.

ok...I am trying really hard to understand what you are trying to convey. What is your concern ? People will stop visiting IV and go to other websites ?
No need to be over-dramatic (did not read any one calling you a traitor). People talk about going back to their home countries too (but I actually see a small fraction of people actually doing it).
I am not sure you understand the concept of an organization offering 'services' to its members. X man hours to produce ? what are you talking about ?
My friend it is not just 'information'. Information is money. All you are talking about is 'forums/discussion boards'. I have mentioned this before as well. IV is more than a discussion board and you can make no comparison to other tracker websites.
Here is some additional info about non-profit orgs. You SHOULD read about non-profit orgs in the below link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-profit
So your definition of support is 'monetary support' only?
I am sorry for being so critical, but then someone has to.
If the idea of monetary only threads is to affirm the show of support, than am i a traitor to the greater good of retrogressed non-immigrants? This is not the right way to go.
Donors here on this very thread have already started talking about people spilling over to sites like and also if members might float other immigration websites.
why are we doing this? Why are we creating differences?
What is the Donor only thread? is it a commodity, that took 'x' man hours to produce, that you are charging money for it?
It is information. period. and as every hour passes, more organisations are providing or striving to provide information free of cost.
Also, what are we discussing in these threads, that we have to be paid members to view it?
Have you even thought about this legally?
Usually, a non-for-proft org has a fund raiser or a money raiser drive or event.
How are you even justifying asking for money to view threads, which is nothing but information that you do not own and have not worked to get it.
Believe me, this is walking on a very thin line.

Well, if you do the direct calculations (eventhough it looks correct for most of us), it always results scary.
But that does not happen always. A Government Agency decided to accept that many applications in a month window, defintely it would not have been decided in a lunch or dinner meeting.
They should have known their limitations and how to handle the situation. If there are 20K 485 applications sitting at the storage, it would not create much problems. But it creates so much administration issues if the number is 600K applications.
One major issue is, every year they are going to receive 600K EAD renewals. They will never get time to work on 485, but life long working on renewing this EAD's and no more further GC processing.
So, its not going to be the case. Now they have money, even if it takes first year some more months, they may go for hiring more contracters OR spliting the applications across different centers processing them.
Its a big administration issue to the agency to keep all the applications pending than us.
So, no worries. There must be a solution ahead for us.

I think the biggest lesson for you will come in through this thread itself. You may find, after all, its not that easy to motivate people to take action, much less form a coherent strategy and run with it.
My guess is in the end you will come out cursing not just the core but all IV members for them lacking or something, because they can't get on board with your idea.
The only reason IV has been able to achieve something with such a low amount of "per capita" effort is because it's an "apoltical" and "volunteer" organization. You change that to "political", and amount of effort (time and money) people will contribute will fizzle out before you can have your post election party!
My suggestion: Open a parallel organzation. Learn what it takes to get people on board with your agenda. if you DELIVER SOMETHING, people will automatically follow you.
Funds will follow if people see viability. Anywaz nothing is coming out of lobbying efforts so currently how does it even matter ?

The state chapters don't seem to be very effective.
I thought I was a member of the CA chapter but in the last few months I received no information from anybody in this chapter.
I was semi-active, meaning I helped with phone calls, money and prints and that's as much as I could do at this point in time.
And at some point there was a discussion about a new user group of only the people that are active and can contribute and it seems they went through with it.
I understand that some things might be better discussed in a smaller group with the people that can dedicate more time, but there are different levels of commitment and if you're not open and accept that some want to help but can't do as much as others, you're cutting yourself short.
When there is a big initiative or a push for funds and effort, you're not even reaching out to the bigger group; you're relying on the same small number of people and they too have limited resources and energy and will get tired.
Maybe Im just having a bad day but that was my experience and CA is one of the most active chapters so maybe all is well Im an isolated case.
That is true and IV core member Nixtor had given details about this visa movement more than a month ago in the all state chapter conference call. This call was strictly for state chapter members of all states. IV core has been meeting DOS and USCIS regularly to find solution to the problems our members have been facing.
Pls take part in the call campaign and contribute funds to be able to find relief.
